The NaNoWriMo Tag

nanowrimo tag

This tag was created by Kristina Horner on youtube and I found it on Tamara’s blog Tamaraniac and decided to do it myself. Even if Kristina created it with booktubers in mind I’m sure she won’t mind if us regular bloggers get on it as well 😀

1. How many times have you done NaNoWriMo?

I’ve done it every year since 2009, so this is my 7th year. I’ve reached 50k every time, woo.

2. How did you first find out about NaNoWriMo?

I don’t even remember. I probably heard about it somewhere in relation to fanfiction writing. I think I first heard about it in 2008 and then must have forgotten about it because I found it again next year, on October 31st. So I decided to join on a whim and began to write right when the clock hit midnight. Good times.

3. What was the name of the first novel you attempted with NaNo?

The Black Unicorn. Hahaha. It’s kind of a magical realism type thing. It wasn’t very good and it was completely pantsed. It still doesn’t have an ending and it probably won’t ever get one because that story made no sense and I can’t be bother to try to rewrite it.

4. Give us a 1 sentence summary of what you’re writing this year.

I’m pantsing again so I don’t even know if I can give you a summary yet. I’ll try though. It’s going to be about a gay couple who used to be in a band together but were forced to break up by their management as to not “ruin their image”. Several years later one of them is struggling to make the ends meet back home while the other one is surging into stardom with his new band. It might get a bit of a “Skater Boy” vibe.

5. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?

No idea. Maybe the reminder that first drafts are always shit, it doesn’t matter who you are and how long you’ve been writing. Everyone needs to edit and rewrite and there’s no need to despair if your first draft is a hot mess.

6. Did you ever take a year off from NaNo? Why?

Nope! I’d feel like that would kind of ruin my nice winning streak.

7. What’s your biggest inspiration when figuring out what to write?

I’ve written fanfiction almost every year, so my fandoms are huge inspirations. That said, all my stories have been quite AU and deviate a lot from the source material. I get a lot of inspiration from music too, that’s how I came to my plot this year.

8. Read us the first sentence from one of your novels.

Oh, god. Okay, I’m going to go with one of the novels that’s not fanficiton. This is from The Shade of Darkness, my NaNo story from 2012. I haven’t even looked at it since 2012 so don’t judge.

“The dream catcher was enormous, way bigger than a human head, with one large circle and two smaller ones attached below it on the sides.”

Edit: I saw another blogger who decided to post the first sentence of all the NaNo stories, and I thought I’d do that too. Why not.

2009: The room was quiet except for stifled sobs and people shuffling in their seats.
2010: If Tom had known this would have happened he would never have gotten out of bed that day. (This is so cliche, I hate it.)
Friend. That was his name. Friend. Just Friend. No last name, no middle name, just Friend. (slightly more than a sentence, but whatever)
2012: (See above)
2013: It had been too long.
“I’ll be back by nine, just call me if there’s any trouble.”

9. Why do you love writing?

I don’t know how to answer this, except that it’s fun. I enjoy it a lot. Plus, the fanfiction community is great and it’s awesome to be able to get that much feedback from a story. I want to write stories that can engage people, and I want to write the books that I want to read. So that’s basically it.

If you’re also doing NaNoWriMo this year I’d love to read your answers to these questions! Let me know what you’re writing this year 😀

How I Read Book Tag

book tag

I was tagged a while ago by Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts. Thanks for tagging me, sorry this is so late! I’m lazy.

How do you find out about new books to read?

I get a lot of my recommendations from watching Booktube and scrolling through my Goodreads feed. Written book reviews on various blogs with similar tastes to me also help a lot.

How did you get into reading?

My mom loves reading and she took me and my sister to the library all the time as kids and we’d always come home with loads of books. I got my own library card in when I was two.

How has your taste in books changed as you got older?

I don’t know if it’s changed that much, to be honest. I loved Goosebumps as a kid, and I still love thrillers and scary books. I still love Harry Potter, and even though I don’t like Twilight anymore I still like young adult books.

How often do you buy books?

Every now and then, though I usually go on a bit of a mini-spree when I do. Especially since the bookstore I shop at always have a BUY 3 FOR 2 thing on English books. I can’t resist that.

How did you get into book reviewing?

I’ve always wanted to write really long and thought-out reviews for the books that I’ve read but it wasn’t until I started watching Booktube earlier this year that I was really inspired to start. All the book tags and talking about books overall just seemed like a lot of fun.

How do you react when you don’t like the end of a book?

I can’t really think of a book where I’ve really hated the ending, but I guess I’d just say “fuck this” and rant about it in my review and possibly on twitter too.

How often do you take a sneak peak at the ending to see if there is a happy ending?

Never. I admit I get a little angry when I hear people do this, hahaha. I just don’t get why, why would you do that to yourself?? Why would you ruin the author’s build-up towards the ending? Shame on you, LOL. I laugh a little when I hear about people that did that with The Fault in Our Stars and got the wrong impression of the ending. Serves you right! I’m the kind of person that will cover the end of a particularly suspenseful page with my hand just so I won’t accidentally glance down and spoil myself.

I tag:

The Bookgasm

Drizzle and Hurricane Books
Kendra @ The Fashionable Reader
Maria @ Marwhal Reads
McKenzie @ Bookings Things and Tea

No pressure to do this if you don’t want to or you’ve already done it. It’s all for fun 🙂 I always try to glance over your book tags to at least make sure you didn’t do it yesterday, but I can’t always go through everything.

Have a good day everyone! 🙂

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I was nominated by Lucy @ Things Lucy Reads, thank you!

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link their website
  • Use the award logo in your post
  • Answer the 10 questions provided by the blogger who tagged you
  • Nominate 10 bloggers
  • Ask them 10 questions

Lucy’s questions:

  1. For new books, do you buy the Hardcover right away or wait on the Paperback to be released? Because I mainly read books in English I only have access to paperbacks, unless I order them online. Only the really popular books that everyone all over the world want to read the moment they come out are sold in hardcover (think Harry Potter and Twilight etc).
  2. Favorite book from this year: That came out this year or that I read this year? Of the ones I’ve read this year it’s Vicious by V. E. Schwab.
  3. One book you recommend to EVERYONE: See above. Also Harry Potter.
  4. How many books have you read this year? Not that many. 25. That includes a couple short-stories and graphic novels.
  5. Favorite book to movie adaptation: This is too hard. I don’t know, I can’t pick one, I love so many movies. I REFUSE.
  6. Do you use your library? I actually just got myself a new library card, thinking I should start using the library again. I used it all the time as a child but in the recent years I’ve only used my uni library for boring research stuff.
  7. Name a book that brought ALL THE FEELS: So many. But let’s pick Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Because reasons.
  8. Favorite book reading snack: Do people have specific book reading snacks???
  9. Do you read in the car/bus/etc.? I read fanfiction on my phone, hah.
  10. Do you loan your books out? No one’s really asked me to borrow my books before apart from my sister, and she’s borrowed some no problem.

I Nominate:

This is really hard because I’ve seen this tag everywhere and I’m pretty sure everyone I follow has done it.

Tell you what, if you want to answer my questions just leave a quick comment and I’ll officially tag you! That might be cheating but I don’t want to bug anyone with a tag they might have already done 12 times.

My questions:

  1. What’s the worst book you’ve ever read?
  2. What makes it so terrible?
  3. Would you rather your favorite book was adapted into a movie or a TV show?
  4. Heroes or villains? Explain.
  5. Dog ears or book marks? Explain.
  6. What’s a book you really like that people wouldn’t expect you to like?
  7. How do you come up with topics to blog about?
  8. Your favorite TV show character runs into your favorite book character. What happens?
  9. You’re now your least favorite character’s sibling. What would you do?
  10. You’re forced to spend a week in the universe of whatever book you picked for question one and you have to hang out with the characters. What happens?

I tried to come up with some fun questions, I don’t know if I succeeded. Like I said if you want to do it just let me know and you’re tagged!

Have a nice day and thanks for reading! 🙂
