I know I haven’t blogged much lately, but I love reading/watching this kind of thing so I wanted to make one. I’ll do one about my favorite reads as well, don’t worry.
This won’t necessarily be a list of the books I read in 2016 that I rated the lowest, but rather a list of books that I were excited about but that ended up falling flat. If this were to be a list of the very worst books I read, then Shatter Me would be on it. But since I didn’t have high expectations of Shatter Me, it didn’t really disappoint me either.
Let’s start with The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler. I love books about twisted teenagers who may or may not murder each other. I was really excited to read this for that reason, but I ended up giving it 3.5 stars. A lot of it was kind of slow, but I still enjoyed it as a whole and the ending was great. However, I much preferred Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas. Everyone should read that one.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Okay, so part of me already suspected I wouldn’t be a fan of this and my expectations weren’t that high, but I’m still disappointed. I hoped I’d like it at least a decent amount, but alas. It’s just not great. It’s all love triangle drama and some weird ghost stuff I barely remember, meanwhile all the fighting and competing is literally fast-forwarded. I’m still semi-planning on reading at least the second book, but I’m not sure if I’ll ever get to it at this rate. I wish I could be in on this hype, but… no.
.
.
This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab. Goddamn it, I wanted to like this but it was just okay to me. I enjoyed the general concept and the way monsters are created in this world is fantastic, but nothing really stood out to me. I still haven’t written a review and at this point I’m not sure if I’ll be able to because I don’t remember much. It was just eh.
Oh, I really like that there’s no romance even though it has a Romeo and Juliet-like plot. A+, thank you.
.
.
And I Darken by Kiersten White. I’M SO SAD I DIDN’T LIKE THIS. I wanted to so so badly and I was so excited to get an ARC of it but then… holy mother of SLOW. I mean, it’s sloooooooooow. It took me months to finish it because it was such a chore to read. The characters are good, but lord have mercy. I just want to read about Lada impaling people alright, I don’t have time for this. I don’t think I have it in me to continue this series.
.
.
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This one made me sad as well, because although I adore the format and the idea, it didn’t grab me 100%. There’s a twist towards the middle that really impressed me, but then it fell through. I’d hoped it was gutsier than that. It felt kind of slow at times, although the characters were great and they all felt real to me. I gave it 3.5 stars, so I didn’t think it was a bad book, it just didn’t give me what I wanted it to. What’s Gemina like compared to this one?

I had to edit the post to add Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I can’t believe I forgot about it. What the hell was this though. No. I like Scorpius. I liked seeing the characters again (even though they were all OOC) but other than that… No. I can’t believe JKR approved of this.

My number one disappointing read of 2016 was no doubt A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E.Schwab. I thought it’d be awesome, but it just wasn’t. I know a lot of people love and worship it, and that’s great, but it did nothing for me. Zilch. I like Holland, it’s a shame he wasn’t in it more. I’m so sad I didn’t love this because I want to be a part of the hype so badly. Boo.
WHEN IS V.E. SCHWAB GONNA PUBLISH THE SEQUEL TO VICIOUS THOUGH BECAUSE VICIOUS IS MY LIFE. I JUST KEEP READING HER STUFF HOPING TO BE JUST AS CAPTIVATED BUT IT’S NOT HAPPENING 😦
What’s the most disappointing reading experience you had last year?
Have you made a post like this? Hit me up with a link because I’d love to read it.

I was incredibly disappointed with the Cursed Child as well. I couldn’t stand most of the characters (excluding Scorpius, of course) and the plot felt more as if it were a fanfiction.

Yeah, it literally is, since JKR didn’t write it. It was just bad fanfiction 😡

It took me four books to like the Throne of Glass series 🙂 I kept going because I loved snarking but only really started enjoying it when I read Queen of Shadows. Like you, I was disappointed by The Cursed Child, I was expecting so much more!

I enjoy snarking too, which is probably why I’m going to end up reading the second book hahaha. I’m glad it picked up for you though! The Cursed Child was just a mess.

I kind of agree with you about ADSOM being disappointing. I enjoyed it overall, but I was expecting a LOT more out of it after seeing tons of bloggers praise that book so much.

I didn’t even enjoy it because I found it boring That’s definitely just me though because everyone else at least sort of enjoyed it. I supposed it’s just not for me.

Nothing wrong with that! Not everyone is going to like every book.

I have all of these except the first one, and I had planned on reading them, but I just haven’t gotten around to them. My husband said the Harry Potter book was one of the most painful books he’s ever read, so I didn’t even bother with that one, and I probably won’t, either. I have heard mixed feelings about And I Darken, so I’m not sure if I’m going to be getting to that one any time soon, either.
I loved reading this post, though!

Yeah, The Cursed Child was quite painful, though I did enjoy the reading experience for the most part because of the nostalgia. But then when I was done I was just left like “… what did I just read, why does this have to exist?” I think you’ll love And I Darken if you don’t mind really slow books that are quite heavy on the history. So for historical fiction lovers I think it’s probably perfect.

Probably The Silk Tree by Julian Stockwin. I love fiction set in the Byzantine empire and was looking forward to this but… it was dire.

Yeah, totally agree about Cursed Child. It didn’t feel like “real” Harry Potter. My most disappointing read was probably Dracula. Who knew vampire hunting could be so boring?

Ohhh, I had to read Dracula for class, I agree it’s so dull.

Aaah it’s so great to know I’m not the only one who felt that way about Throne of Glass, This Savage Song, And I Darken, and A Darker Shade of Magic! I haven’t read the other two you mentioned, but I’m just going to assume we’d agree on those, too. Sorry to see you had so many disappointing books last year. Hopefully this year will be better. =)

Are you me?? I rarely see someone who agrees with me on all of those, especially ADSOM. I’ll definitely have to follow your blog! I glanced at your snarking Obsidian posts and I LOVE it even though I haven’t read that book. Have you read Shatter Me? I think you’d sink into the abyss just like I did.

I think I’m you. We’ll have to confirm.
Aw, I’m glad you like my snark! The book is SO BAD, good lord.
I have Shatter Me written down as a potential future snark-read, because I’ve heard it’s awful. If you think it’s an abyss worth sinking into, I might have to consider it for my next snark once I’ve survived Obsidian.

Shatter Me is DEFINITELY snark material. The writing is so over-the-top that I couldn’t believe my own eyes. The metaphors are so far beyond what’s acceptable.

All right, my interest is piqued. Awful metaphors might be my weakness.

I read the first Throne of Glass book years ago and was underwhelmed. It’s possible Book 2 wasn’t even out at that point. I decided to stop reading the series and have been baffled by its explosion since then. Though I grant that it’s kind of clear that Maas wrote the base of ToG as a teenager, and I assume the series has improved with her experience as a author.

Yeah, it was definitely obvious that she was young when she first wrote it. I wish it had been edited more to take some of that teen writer feel out of it. I’ve heard it improves and I own the next two books, so I might as well try and see.

Exactly! I imagine it did go through revision, but the underlying feeling was there. It reminded me of stuff I wrote where I was young. Mary Sue-ish character who seems to physically resemble the author and all that. :p

I found the Gender Game (and series) disappointing. I could only read the first two and thought ‘I’m out.’ The story seemed pretty interesting but it was so badly written and the characters just annoyed me.
