This weekly meme was was created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is a “songs I wish were books“. I love this topic so much. I already have several spotify playlists for my various OTPs, so I’ll just go through them and find the songs that give me the most feels.
Song for Zula by Phosphorescent
Oh man, this is my favorite song lately. I heard it on a commercial on TV and then went on a hunt to find it. It’s so beautiful, beginning to end, and it gives me all the OTP feels. I actually just wrote a 50k fanfic (Ian and Mickey) based on what I felt when I hear this song. I’d love it if it was a book.
Some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a fading thing
Just as fickle as a feather in a stream
See, honey, I saw love
You see it came to me
It put its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing
Skin by Sixx:A.M.
My fanfic was half the song above and half this one. This one gives me all the feels too and I want a book to give me the same feels.
‘Cause they don’t even know you
All they see is scars
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart
Let them find the real you
Buried deep within
Let them know with all you’ve got
That you are not your skin
Astronaut by Simple Plan
I don’t know, I just really like this song and I think it would make a great book about loneliness, isolation and feeling forgotten.
(The Martian doesn’t count. Too literal. lmao)
‘Cause tonight I’m feeling like an astronaut
Sending SOS from this tiny box
And I lost all signal when I lifted up
Now I’m stuck out here and the world forgot
Can I please come down, cause I’m tired of drifting round and round
Can I please come down?
House on a Hill by The Pretty Reckless
I’ve loved The Pretty Reckless for years and I love this song. This band is way too underrated. It can be interpreted in lots of ways, it could be about society in general where the children are the only ones who are still pure and innocent… for now. There’s something so eerie about it, if we just look at the lyrics only. I’m not sure what the book would be about exactly, but it would be dark and beautiful. I’m sure it could make a fantastic dystopia.
In this house on a hill the dead are living still
Their intention is to kill and they will, they will
Keep your children safe inside, out of pocket, out of mind
Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will
Piledriver Waltz by Alex Turner
There are lots of ways of interpreting this song too, I think, but I’m just really feeling it. It makes me melancholic, and that’s how I like my books.
You look like you’ve been for breakfast at the Heartbreak Hotel
And sat in the back booth by the pamphlets and the literature on how to lose
Your waitress was miserable and so was your food
If you’re gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes
Coming To Terms by Carolina Liar
This song has been one of my favorites for ages. It’s beautiful and angsty. I could replay it forever.
I’m coming to terms
I’m starting to learn
This ain’t all it’s cracked up to be
Cause I’m using you, you’re using me
It’s never as easy as we believe
Delicate by Damien Rice
All the Lost feels. I used to have a playlist of all the songs that were on Lost and this was always my favorite. It could make a great, angsty plotline.
We might kiss when we are alone
Nobody’s watching
We might take it home
We might make out when nobody’s there
It’s not that we’re scared
It’s just that it’s delicate
So why do you fill my sorrow
With the words you’ve borrowed
From the only place you’ve know
And why do you sing Hallelujah
If it means nothing to you
Why do you sing with me at all?
Mermaid by Train
Let’s interpret this literally for a sec, because mermaid books. Are there any good mermaid books out there? Because I’ve only read mermaid AU fanfiction (and they’re always fantastic). I want mermaid books.
Bonus for this music video having Daniel Dae Kim in it.
I was bored and out of tears, then I saw you washed up on the shore
I offered you my coat, thank goodness love can float
Crazy how that shipwreck meant my ship was comin’ in
We talked ’till the sun went down
Love on the Puget Sound
My treasure map was on your skin
Beauty in the water, angel on the beach
Ocean’s daughter, I thought love was out of reach
‘Till I got her, had I known it could come true
I would have wished in ninety-two, for a mermaid just like you
She Keeps Me Warm by Mary Lambert
This music video is too cute, I can’t deal. Basically I want a book based on it. I’ve read plenty of “coffee shop” fics but never a book. And I’ve read way too few books with f/f relationships in them.
What’s your middle name?
Do you hate your job?
Do you fall in love too easily?
What’s your favorite word?
Do you like kissing girls?
Can I call you baby?
Where Do Broken Hearts Go by One Direction
So I’m not much of a “directioner” or whatever they’re called these days, but I do have a weak spot for boyband music and a few of their songs speak to the 11 year old girl in me who loved Backstreet Boys. Anyway, this is one of those songs. I imagine a “the one that got away” type of story, where one character decides to look for a person they hurt years ago, having no idea where they are but knowing they’re the love of their life. This is another song I’ve been contemplating writing a fic inspired by.
Yeah, it took me some time but I figured out
How to fix up a heart that I let down
Now I’m searching every lonely place
Every corner calling out your name
Tryin’ to find you but I just don’t know
Where do broken hearts go?
Did any of these songs remind you of a book you’ve read? Do tell! What songs do you wish were a book?
