The Book Love Tag!

book love tagWe’re nearing Valentines’s Day, so I decided to try to make a tag that’s somewhat relevant. I hope I’m not making anything that’s too similar to anything that already exists. I’ve never tried creating a tag before but it’s not too shabby, I think. I hope. Let’s get to it. I’m really nervous to post this for some reason.

Feel free to use my button if you want 🙂 Thanks a lot to my friend Nadia who bothered to create it for me!

Try as I might I can’t think of any book couples I ship as much or care as much about as Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter

  • Ron Weasley (Harry Potter). My one true love tbh
  • Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games). We are one.

I have a few different scenarios for how this went down. Either Ron did it, totally nervous and stuttering and sweating (“Would you just calm down, you know she’s going to say yes,” said Harry.) and he probably dropped the ring so it rolled under the couch and Hermione just rolled her eyes, chuckling and crying at the same time (“Yes, you big oaf.”). OR Hermione got tired of waiting for what Ron was obviously too chicken-shit to do so she did it, no nonsense, completely straight to the point, going down on one knee and everything. OR one day Hermione just couldn’t take it anymore, so while having breakfast  she said, with an exasperated sigh, “Are you ever going to ask me to marry you?”

We’re moving into non-book territory for a bit. Jack and Kate from LOST. Don’t even get me started.

My least favorite romance trope is definitely The Handsome Stalker that tends to go hand in hand with Abuse Masked as Romance. I can’t stand it, please stop. It doesn’t belong in young adult books especially.

I am weak for tropes like pretend relationships (though I’ve only seen it in fanfiction this far, not that I mind).

Also the “ladykiller/maneater in love” is something I have a weakness for. Like a player or a “I never fall in love” type of person who finds themselves head over heels with someone. It needs to be done right, no instalove, but I think that’s a given. Think Brian Kinney (Queer as Folk), Logan Echolls (Veronica Mars), James ‘Sawyer’ Ford (LOST), Mickey Milkovich (Shameless US), Shane McCutcheon (The L Word), Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl), Santana Lopez (Glee), Effy Stonem (Skins)…

Yeeeees. My favorite is Dean and Cas from Supernatural. They’re meant for each other.

love triangles books

I used to not mind them so much when I was younger, but now they make me roll my eyes more often than not. Is that really the only way you can make your plot interesting and engaging? I feel like a lot of authors now are just trying to create a new “Team Jacob/Edward” craze. Stop.

love triangles books

It’s done really well in The Hunger Games I think, because the focus isn’t on the love triangle and the refreshing thing is that Katniss really doesn’t care all that much, she just wants to survive. She’d be just fine without either of them.

I used to be all about Team Jacob (Twilight) but I’ve since realized they’re both assholes. And while Bella isn’t a great character either, none of them deserve her. Yikes. Edward with his whole Handsome Stalker trope and then Jacob and that forced kiss in Eclipse (I think?). No. Awful. Why did I like this.

Harry and Hermione! (Harry Potter). Hallelujah, a deep male/female friendship that’s only a friendship and has only ever been a friendship. Beautiful. I want more. I’m still side-eyeing JKR for saying she wishes she had paired them together in the end. What? Are you nuts? The media desperately needs platonic male/female relationships, I’m just confused why she thinks that’d be a good idea. As if Hero Gets the Girl is something we’re not sick of.

I have a lot of feelings about platonic relationships. I’m also really into Bellamy and Clarke from The 100 (the show, not the books). I’ll fight you on the fact that they’re platonic and/or familial, lmao. But each to their own.

ron and hermione holding hands

So the kiss in Deathly Hallows will always be a classic, but I reaaaally love the scene where Harry notes that Ron and Hermione must have fallen asleep holding hands. That gives me OTP feels but also angsty feels for Harry who feels a little left out and alone in the harsh war times. The fact that it was in the movie delighted me.

“Her arm curved to the floor, her fingers inches from Ron’s. Harry wondered whether they had fallen asleep holding hands. The idea made him feel strangely lonely.”

Hermione mentioned this strange Muggle tradition off-handely one day and Ron latched onto it, confused but intent on doing it right. He went a little crazy with it. Balloons everywhere, teddy bears everywhere, chocolate melting all over the place, the entire house so full of stuff it took days to clean it up.

My bookish OTP… Gah, I don’t know! So many! A recent favorite is Sofia and Gideon from Their Fractured Light. I love them together! They’re not perfect, but when they’re together they may as well be.
And my NOTP? Joffery with anyone, dead or alive. ugh.
